Feature Story
This assignment focused on the process of making a feature story and what steps to take. We were assigned our partners and after that we had to find out what their story was. I got Andrew and one of the many things he enjoyed was video so I asked more questions to get the reason why he enjoys video production so much. It turns out that as a kid, Andrew moved from state to state three times. This really affected who he is now and that is why I decided to do my feature story on that. Once I decided, I interviewed him in the courtyard to show some Kansas landscape. For my B-Roll, I used videos that were taken by his parents, most including him. After I got all the videos I needed, I recorded my voice overs and edited my video.
For this project, I learned how to do a J & L edit which is when you put the audio of an interview before you can actually see the video. I also learned the basics of how to structure and film an interview. I learned that you need to make the interviewee comfortable before getting into any heavy questions.
In my edits, I am changing the duration of the lower thirds because it does not need to be on every bit I put of Andrew during the interview. I also need to change the way that I make the voice over fit into the video. At the beginning, I left in the part of me asking a question but I now know that I need to take that part out and put a voiceover instead. For the most part, I like the way that I used the B-Roll and the way it fit into the video.
In conclusion, I think I am more prepared for my next feature story because aside from the voice overs, which I can work on, I now have more knowledge on the type of interview and editing.
